I smoke black soot from my lawn mower, how I can trobleshoot this problem?

I have one horsepower motor 13 in a brush cutter self-propelled. that is running hard black smoke coming from the exhaust gases. (Not much but enough to see that this is not normal). I checked and cleaned cap was also covered with soot. This is my fuel mixture problem? Could be a problem with the induction of all the candle lights at regular intervals? Could there be a more serious problem (eg, piston rings.)?
